Easter Shirts With HTV Scraps

How To Make Easter Shirts With HTV Scraps

Make your own Easter shirts with HTV scraps, some black Siser EasyWeed, and decoration-ready t-shirts. In this DIY project, we layer vinyl and show you how to reuse your HTV scraps.

For this DIY project, you’ll need:

    The Prepping

    Step 1: Find your design.

Find a .SVG design file that you like. For our Easter project, we chose these five different Easter egg designs in Cricut design space with our Cricut subscription. Once you find your design(s), adjust the size of all the elements to fit your blank t-shirt.

Step 2: Turn on your heat press.

Turn your heat press or home iron to the heat setting that your HTV manufacturer suggests for the product and brand of HTV. We are using scraps of Siser EasyWeed HTV, so the heat press should be set to 305℉.

Step 3: Gather HTV scraps and cut them into strips.

Using the straight edge cutter, cut your HTV scraps into strips that are equal in length and width. You should have enough strips to cover one Easter egg.

Does it matter what kind of HTV you use?

Yes. We used scraps of Siser EasyWeed HTV. You can mix and match whatever kind of HTV you desire, as long as they all share the same post-press peeling instructions.

Refer to the HTV manufacturer’s pressing instructions to see if your specific type of HTV is a hot peel or cold peel. You need to either use all “hot peel HTV” or all “cool peel HTV”. Do not mix them.

Step 4: Cut a piece of heat-safe transfer paper.

Use scissors to cut a piece of heat-safe transfer paper that is at least 1 inch larger than your entire design.

    The Making

Step 1: Offset each design element by .083”.

Within Cricut Design Space, we ungrouped all the elements and created a solid background with the “offset” tool. When you click “offset”, type in .083 to create a thin outline around the element. This will add a new layer behind the original element. Repeat this with each element in the design.

Step 2: Place black Siser EasyWeed HTV on the cutting mat.

Lay the black Siser EasyWeed HTV on the cutting mat shiny side faced down. Use a brayer tool to ensure the vinyl sticks to the mat and that there are no air bubbles.

Step 3: Cut offset elements from black Siser EasyWeed HTV.

Cut the offset layers from black Siser EasyWeed HTV. Then weed out the negative spaces in the design, being sure to leave the design elements on the clear plastic carrier sheet. Cut around each egg to separate them.

Step 4: Place heat-safe transfer paper.

Place the heat-safe transfer paper on the cutting mat.

Step 5: Place HTV strips onto the heat-safe transfer paper.

Place the HTV strips onto the heat-safe transfer paper shiny side down. For best results, make sure there are no gaps or overlaps between the strips. Use a brayer tool to roll out the vinyl and ensure there are no air bubbles.

Step 6: Cut the easter egg designs.

    Cut the easter egg designs.

Step 7: Peel away the heat-safe transfer paper from the mat.

Peel the heat-safe transfer paper off the mat and weed out the negative spaces. Then cut out any excess paper and vinyl.

Step 8: Prepare your blank t-shirt.

Remove any excess wrinkles, moisture, and excess fiber on the blank t-shirt by lint rolling and pre-pressing the blank for 3 to 5 seconds.

Step 9: Map out the placement of your design.

Use the acrylic t-shirt ruler to map out the placement of the easter egg design on your blank t-shirt.

Step 10: Press the black HTV layers on the blank.

Place the black HTV easter eggs on the blank t-shirt with the carrier sheet faced up. Then place a piece of parchment paper over it. Press the design for 7 seconds to tack it in place. Remove the carrier sheet after pressing.

Step 11: Press the multi-colored HTV layers on the blank.

Place the multi-colored HTV easter eggs on top of their corresponding black backgrounds while being sure they don’t overlap.

Step 12: Press all layers for an additional 15 seconds.

Place a piece of parchment paper on top of the design and press for an additional 15 seconds.

Step 13: Peel away the carrier sheets.

Peel off the carrier sheets. The Siser EasyWeed is both a cold and hot peel so you can peel it immediately after pressing or after it cools.

    Step 14: Voila!

All done! Now you’re ready to go on an Easter egg hunt!
